There are seasons when the ocean simply gives you everything. Right now in Cabo San Lucas, we are living in one of them.
Water temperatures off Land’s End are sitting in the upper 70s and climbing into the low 80s as warm currents push up from the south. For anglers, that number is everything. Warm water is the dinner bell of the Sea of Cortez. It pulls bait schools in tight, fires up the pelagics, and turns every trip out of the marina into a real shot at the fish of a lifetime.
We Saw the Proof Right in Our Own Marina
You do not have to take our word for it. Take a look at this video from the first week of May, shot right here in the Cabo San Lucas marina.
Those are schools of fish spawning in the shallows along the rocks, just steps from where our boats tie up. When fish are comfortable enough to spawn inside the marina, it tells you something important. The water is clean, the temperature is right, and the food chain is thriving from the bottom up.
A healthy marina means a healthy bay. A healthy bay means loaded bait grounds. And loaded bait grounds mean the big predators we all dream about, marlin, dorado, tuna, and wahoo, are close, hungry, and feeding hard.
What the Warm Water Means for Your Rod and Reel
Here is what these conditions are producing on the water right now:
Striped marlin are the headliners. Boats are finding active billfish on the banks, with multiple hookups in a single day becoming a regular story back at the dock.
Dorado love this warm, blue water. The bite has been strong, and these acrobatic fighters are showing up in excellent sizes. They also happen to be one of the best eating fish in the ocean.
Tuna are moving in with the warming currents, with football sized fish in good numbers and bigger ones mixed in as summer builds.
Wahoo are crashing lures on the temperature breaks, giving lucky anglers the fastest ride in the Sea of Cortez.
Inshore, roosterfish season is firing up too, along with jacks, snapper, and grouper for anglers who want nonstop action closer to the beach.
Why Now Is the Time
Conditions like these do not wait around. The water is warm, the bait is thick, the fish are spawning, feeding, and stacked up within easy reach of the marina. Long summer days mean more hours on the water, calm seas mean comfortable runs to the grounds, and the blue water clarity makes every presentation count.
This is the window. The anglers who book now are the ones who will be telling the stories later.
